9 Tips to Save You From Election Stress

You might have Election Stress if you feel numb, disoriented, enraged, scared, elated, ready to fight. Current elections may actually make people feel alienated from friends or family.

Consider these tips to feel more centered before and after the stress of current political divides and the election process.

1. If you have the ability take an extra bit of TIME OFF WORK. You’re worth it.
2. After a bit of NATURE RECOVERY, such as taking walks in the country or park, CONNECT WITH OTHERS who inspire you, like friends, family or groups.
3. LOVE YOURSELF with what replenishes you: A bath, a massage, time in nature, meditation, holding your grandchild. Take an action to ground yourself in your own being again.
4. READ something from writers or your spiritual tradition that remind you of the inherent goodness in life, and of the human spirit that has been through countless global transitions and yet still triumphs.
5. When you feel stress, BE PRESENT by taking a few full relaxing breaths while lowering your shoulders. Visually breathe out the negative scenarios that are “movies” in your head. Breathe. Do it now. Lower your shoulders, and drop from your head to your breath. Do this several times.
6. DANCE! Literally in your home or elsewhere. Choose incredible music.
Move the body! Find this freedom from living focused in thought. Be IN the body.
7. TELL THE TRUTH ABOUT YOUR SITUATION: You are more than any candidate or political party, or religion, or skin color, nation, or any election outcome. Nothing of this world has more power over your peace than your own being.
8. MOVE FROM APATHY OR ANGER TO ACTION. Decide what causes or movements inspire you and contribute money, time or your talents. Serve yourself and this world by your actions.
9. LET GO OF BEING RIGHT. Stop battling “against” others. Being right and defending your positions requires energy and can exhaust you.

I hope these tips help you to take positive action regarding election stress or any stress that my effect your life. We can only experience life fully, happily, and in harmony with others when we care for ourselves in ways that replenish us – then we can contribute to a more harmonious humanity and sustainable planet. – David Ellzey
