How to Create Equality

Perhaps more than ever, in today’s world, our minds often build up walls of judgement against others personally and globally, creating enemies even before they exist, and imagining dangers – reinforced by the news’ intense focus on war, fear, and violence. We unconsciously become indoctrinated into a subtle distrust of others. This makes for unhealthy and destructive relationships personally and between nations.

I propose, symbolically consider this ancient practice, and if not in reality, at least in the heart. One preparation for beginning the sacred Japanese tea ceremony is to squat at a stone water basin to cleanse your face and hands before entering the tea house. The deeper purpose of this practice is to have all participants surrender pride and status and humbly recognize our human and spiritual equality beneath all seeming differences. This is an equality and union of respect and love – Like the universal love of the mother or father for the child – and the ensuing shared pain of the loss of the same. This is not founded in religion or philosophy, but a universal principle of the heart. May we all have a metaphorical stone water basin to cleanse in and return us to this union and equality beneath all appearing differences. It is humanity’s only sustainable option.
