I Just Met My Mind in Person!

I just met my mind in person. I know. Funny phrase, right? But let me know if this rings a bell. Someone criticizes or accuses you for whatever reason. Your stomach tightens, being criticized is not a good thing for you. The body and history say, “I’ve done something wrong!!” Guilt ensues, most likely you shut down or you move into defensiveness, or attack mode, subtle, covert, or not so subtle. Above all, not grounded or with clear thinking … Not good no matter how you look at it.

What just happened? You met your mind in person! What do I mean? You met someone who is basically saying what your mind has stored in perfect little files from long ago – files and feelings that still hurt, sting, anger, etc. You react to the person verbalizing those thoughts – when all along the person is only reigniting those bothersome and historic files in your mind. They are simply acting the perfect role for you to meet your mind in person! Realize this, and place the ownership where it’s due in your mind and memory – where you can choose to listen or not. You’re free. And thus, let the person act out their shakespearian role for you. After all, how often does your mind dress up in clothes for your entertainment?

After the entertainment, if needed, and hopefully with a bit less reactivity, you can choose an appropriate response that can move the conversation through a doorway to resolution that serves all concerned.

From Self-Hatred to Freedom

The agony of hating oneself is

could be a mistake.
