What To Do When The World Doesn’t “Need” You
As I sit here, RIGHT NOW, in this Sunday afternoon. This moment is strangely wonderful and could be scary. The warm sun pouring in my window from the frigid winter world outside. This moment, like evenings or weekends, or anytime of any day, when you have a moment without responsibility, without a “have to”, or the world pushing in, there is a strange silence. A strange space without orientation, without having to get on the internet or Facebook, or emails, or needing to call someone that you owe a call. Without filling the silence with music. Or tending to a child you need to care for. Or getting to something in the house that’s been waiting forever.
The scary part is, What do I do if the outer world doesn’t “need” me? If for this moment I am just here, just me, invisible to the cosmos, just now, aware of being. Just aware. Just being. No role to fulfill. The walls stoically looking back at me. If the outer world doesn’t need me for this moment, then the inner world often kicks in. “Danger, danger! Do something! Fill this space, fill this void! Hurry!”
Or if you don’t activate the body to fill space, the mind says, “No worries, I’ll fill it with thinking, worrying, problems to fix in the future.” At least this way your present moment is filled with what you WILL have to be responsible for LATER. Phew! That was close, you almost had a moment of simply resting here and now, quiet, and at peace. That can be scary.
Okay, I’m joking, but only partially. Try it, literally right now. Let space or silence be more real than the passing thoughts and your impulses to multitask. Just be here. In some radical discovery, you may find solice. Your soul and your body may find nourishment. Drink, my friends, of this nourishing fountain of now. Close your eyes. Be here without hurry. Drown in this silence, this space, this now.
